The First 90 Days After a Parent Dies

An Adult Child's Checklist Guide to Probate and Estate Settlement

by Jordan Hale

If you are reading this, someone you love just died. You did not ask to become the executor. You are not a lawyer. You are reading this at 11pm because someone has to figure out what comes next. This book is the field guide.

About the author and the imprint

Jordan Hale comes from a tech and philosophy background. The book grew out of a personal project — stepping in to help a family member with Alzheimer's manage accounting, paperwork, and estate planning before the disease made the work too hard to share. What that project revealed was that the legal and administrative side of supporting an aging parent — and eventually settling an estate — is one of the most disorienting things adult children ever do.

Plato Press is a small imprint with one working principle: be useful. Books here are short, plain-spoken, and built around the moment a reader is actually in — not the moment someone calmer might be in later.

Free printable checklists from The First 90 Days

Print these for the kitchen counter. They are the load-bearing tools from the book, formatted to be useful at 3am when nothing is.

  • Ten-document baseline — the documents every estate needs, in the order they get asked for
  • Five-document institution packet — what every bank and brokerage will require
  • First-day phone call sheet — the three calls in the right sequence
  • Ninety-day timeline — the whole-book overview on one page

No newsletters about marketing. No upsells. One quiet email if the next book ships or the checklists get updated.

What's next

The next field guide is in early planning. Subjects on the list include caregiving in the first thirty days after a dementia diagnosis, and the first-year tax survival kit for new freelancers. If you subscribed above, you will hear when one ships.
